Burson & Grado
My sole priority in this audio space is to hear everything.
And there are a ton of products and brand that I have yet to hear. So when I get a chance to hear two of them at once, I jump at the chance. Two of these brands, Burson Audio and Grado have been on the list. Though I didn’t expect to hop right into the deep end with these two.
The Burson Audio Conductor Stellar is basically a high-end, all-in-one desktop DAC, preamp, and headphone amplifier. It's built around an ESS9039PRO DAC, a fully discrete output stage, and eight watts of Class-A power, which is a lot of serious hardware packed into one very substantial aluminium box. The idea is pretty simple: plug your digital sources into it, connect just about any pair of headphones you want, and the Stellar handles everything in between. You can also use it as a DAC or preamp and feed the rest of your stereo system.
And sitting beside it for most of this review was the Grado Signature S550, which is also not exactly dipping my toes into the shallow end of Grado.
The S550 is an open-back headphone from Grado's Signature line, built around a 50mm dynamic driver and these beautiful walnut housings. It's essentially a more premium, modern take on the classic Grado formula, with detachable cables, updated cushions, and a slightly warmer, more relaxed approach to the sound Grado is known for.
So this became a pretty interesting introduction to both brands. One was going to show me what a high-end desktop system could do. The other was going to give me something very interesting to plug into it.
